We will never know the true translation because we can't speak to the authors about what it meant.
But i can see how an "alternative translation" of a work could be used for manipulation and a naked power grab. Hell, that's pretty much the history of christianity from a cynic's point of view.
However, i will find it more than a bit hypocritical, like the Rushdie issue, where the vocal muslims who are so quick to call us "infidel" will get butt-hurt about this and claim we're being mean.
