Overpass Collapse on Highway 19 Quebec

Oh my god!

You all should live here to see the poo hitting the fan. For YEARS now the government here has used sub-par contractors, lowest common denominator inspections and god knows what else to fix the roads for the least amount of money possible. The old joke is that you know you've driven from Quebec into Ontario when the car stops bouncing around on the highway. And I'm not talking from anything but experience. I literally live 20 minutes from the border with Ontario and the roads are about ten gazillion times nicer there than here. So what's going on if not deliberate incompetence to reduce costs?

I even know what the people in charge call this tactic of willfully putting people's lives in danger to save money. They call it "Managed Risk". Basically, they figure that the law of probability is on their side and that if there is an accident it'll take years to occurs and be a small one that they can sweep under the carpet.

Boy did they turn up craps on that one. Now they're in the manure and pretty deep at that.

Five of 18 other Montreal-area overpasses examined Monday by government inspectors were found to require further inspection, and some will eventually need to be replaced, even though they pose no immediate safety problems.

So basically that's 5 chances out of 18 of happening again? WEEEEEEE luck is on my side!!!!

What's really funny is that this already happened before in 2000... TWICE.

This is getting exciting. I can't wait to go back on the road next week. It'll be an adventure MWAHAHAHA!

The people that died under that overpass have not been lucky, I mean going slower or faster and they would still be alive I do have to agree for the roads, they suck bigtime and all they are doing is patching the holes and when thet make new asphalt, it's starting to crack the next year, I saw that in Saint-Georges.... Or they are plain stupid or they should remake all the "structure" under the road and then restart all in new.... but it cost money and government don't like to spend money if it doesn't go in their pockets....

I live in Ontario and have driven in QC.. I must say, you guys are right, your roads suck big time. They kind of scare me a bit. I never forget having a piece of ashvalt fly up off a truck wheel and hit the roof of the car at about 110km/h. The chuck was about the size of a grapefruit and did some damage.

What blows my mind is that the overpass that collapsed was inspected what 2 hours before? Who the heck was the inspector? Have they been shot yet? Are they paying to raise the poor little boy whos parents didn't pick him up from practice.. That situation is horrible. Can you imagine, you're driving along and you maybe see some movement above you ahead but before you can consider what it was, blam, dead.

RIP to the victoms.

I take Autoroute 50 up to my folk's cottage, and once you leave Hull, you can tell.

Jeremy: You've got about a 1.3:3 chance of biting it, or about 36% chance. Ontario has mandatory reviews, and hwy. 417/174 were to the point of "needing immediate resurfacing and road repairs" because of the "Dangerously poor road surface." To be honest, the difference is quite literally night and day compared to Quebec... The WORST road I've ever driven in Ontario is an average road in PQ.

I saw this kind of thing in the US as well, although, not to the same extent.

Transeat In Exemplum: Let this stand as the example.

I've been on that overpass before and on Turceau too. I went to Ottawa the weekend before the accident and to Pointe Claire the same weekend and geez the overpass are in bad shape. I mean, you gotta be stupid not to understand that they are in bad shape. The concrete IS NOT THERE ANYMORE and they don't do anything. You can see the reinforcement bars in the concrete.

Also, yes there was an inspector 2 hours before teh accident. Do you know what he said? "There's no problem, it's just concrete falling from the overpass but it's ok" I sure hope he get hang for that one. But this is quebec, the land where criminals have more rights than good people. I can't believe how this province s***. Yeah the road s***. I've hit some decent hole. Deep enough to sink the whole tire in.

When I see the goverment repair roads and give the contract to 2-3 company AT THE SAME TIME, I just can<t believe it. The repaired the road by my place and they give the contract to 3 company. The first one took the contract but could't do the job cause they had other contract so the goverment hired another company. That one worked a bit but gave up. They still get paid. So another one took the contract but did only a little bit of the work in 2 months. They took about a foot of dirst/gravel from under the old road and did the ditch. They did that in about 2 weeks. The rest of the time they were stalled because one of the machine wasn't working right so they couldn't do anything else. Then the first company came back and finish the work in 3 weeks. All 3 company got paid and nobody gave a ********* about the tiime and money that got spent there. All they did was to put a sign saying that they spent 3 millions for about 1/2 a mile of construction. That's wasted money. They should cut the money of all those bastard living on Social help that can work. I can understand the people that can't work but 95% of the others are just to lazy to work and eat our freakin money.

I could go on and on about how this province s*** but I'll stop. Pretty useless.
