honestly....
whats the point in even ANNOUNCING doing it?
its like all the idiots who make a big deal about boycotting a movie... it only draws more attention and interest to the movie in question.
but back to france.....
back when they decided not to get into a poop storm aka war. all these "idiots" or "yahoos" as jimmyZ and some would say....were like
"lets boycott france!"
so trivial crap happened:
-French fries changed to freedom fries
-some hair shops offered "freedom twists" instead of french twists for proms
-uppity people stopped buying french wines.
-and above all, the same people who boycotted anything french, live in a country where the main status of FREEDOM is called the STATUE OF LIBERTY, which was designed by two of the guys who made the Eiffel Tower...IN FRANCE, and the statue was given to us by the french.
as a result:
1) the same fried potatoes still added to the fast food abuse = obesity epidemic as its called. changing the name didnt change the product
2) people lowered the prices on "freedom twists" cause no one initially knew what the F they were and most just wanted their "hair did", so to pass on the new name, the had to offer discounts in many places...
3) The lowering the price on the ALCOHOL eventually made the prices lower, resulting in quick sales of quality products for people who normally couldnt afford it. the avg street wino was able to choose crown royal or a normally 50$ + priced bottle of wine....some priced higher than 3-400 were sold for 50 or less in some stores....due to managers ANGER....
4) we havent blown up the S.O.L....yet. nor have we banned it....yet. but yet its still prob the largest french present anyone has given outside a lifetime supply of crossants.
so whats the point of boycotting anything if its just a half arsed attempt?
- In the case of french/freedom fries: it's been tried before (in 1917/18 and in 1941-45 with saurkraut being called Liberty Pickled Cabbage... didn't catch on too well, lasted about 2 months in either case)
- French wines: if you're that simperish that you're going to allow blind patriotism affect your taste in things culinary, you probably shouldn't be drinking anything alcoholic in the first place
- French twists: see the resounding success of Liberty Pickled Cabbage.
It seems very communist to me. It's like trying to eradicate the existence of something because you don't agree with it, or it because it might actually make sense... delete the carbuncle and fuzz everything around it, and it never existed right? It's like what Lenin tried to do with Trotsky, and further what Stalin tried to do with Lenin.
If you want to organise a boycott, part of it is getting the word out... Like Grapes from South American countries, or Blood Diamonds from Sierra Leone... if you exert enough media pressure, people will stop buying the item and that will leverage change (not always good, but change nonetheless). Deciding to take the limp-wristed way out by just calling something you want to have something else and thereby absolving your aristocratic and stingy conscience, you're not doing anything to help the problem, assuming there is one to begin with. Boycott means you are not going to buy something, this whole de-Frenching of the US (or the lame attempt so-called) is just a bait and switch. In the case of the wine, serious collectors had a field-day buying the wines from 3 very good years, from those of us that drink it without having to try and assuage our conscienouses, THANKS!
My thoughts: Call a spade a spade. People that don't toe the party line are not necessarily your enemies. And finally, get the f**k over yourself, you're part of a greater whole.

GAM swore? What is going on here...must have been the liberty picked cabbage that go you all in a tizzy ehh?
But I would agree with GAM, the only way that a boycott aucutally works is if some central authourity figure stands up and takes control (ie Ghandi) of the situation. I love my french fries anyhow.
Hmm, I don't think she should have gotten all that money, but it seems like that cop was a little high strung. She wasn't armed and really posed little threat (then again, you sometimes don't know a threat until it's too late).
I definately would have done EVERYTHING that trooper said to me at that point, as he looked like he was going to pull the trigger. She didn't seem to follow the commands very well either. I think he used to be a DS, cause that caused a real vivid flashback to basic!
Scrapes and bruises do not equal 6 figure settlements. Cop needs to maybe sit behind a desk for a while and chill out. Maybe an anger managment class or something, cause that dude was livid! Lady should have had the ticket dropped and her record cleared of the insodent as a settlement if anything, as she broke the law and was speeding.
I know that you can go to a more populated area if you feel unsafe because there was a guy rolling around WI a while back that used to fake being a cop and pull over women late at night just to rape them. Well, it's legal in WI, I don't know about North Crack a laky or where ever they were.

boycotting something can be very effective. and if not effective to the corp/product/country it can at least give u a little self satisfaction.
I for instance boycot KFC along with numerous other products that have bad bussiness or practices. now regardless of wether my boycotting changes anything i know that i feel better for not directly supporting it.
but boycotting an entire country because they dont want to get into a WAR? wtf...
personally i am glad the french arent getting into the war. the more countries that get involved the bigger it gets. the french are doing themselves a big favor not jumping in. cant put any blame on them for protecting their own.
The biggest hole, is the illusion of invulnerability.

wel the french had trade agreements with saddam for cheaper oil so it was in their best intrest to stay out. i mean they take great care of their people so i guess thats the reasons the arabians in france decided to burn all the cars in southern france just to show their appreciation. as for the statue of liberty yeah it was givin to use when france had a pair.
The French had no such deal. The Money from oil sales went to a UN fund, and was sold at market price from there, Iraq bought medical supplies from the UN at less than market price.
The French and Germans wanted to stay out of Iraq because mainly:
- They didn't trust Bush.
- They knew the US oil interest would tap the region dry.
- They knew that Hussein had made it very difficult to occupy the country, much less control it
- They had major construction contracts to build new aquaducts, water filtration and sewage plants from the Tigris river to Tikrit and eventually Baghdad
Russia had a different reason: They wanted to keep the oil prices afloat because they're keeping the Khazakhstan oilfields under tight wraps.
The rioting in France is not related to that... It's related to the reconstruction from WWII. The French Gov't brought in a large number of migrant workers from Syria, Lebanon and other countries in north Africa to help demolish, clear and rebuild buildings that had been completely or partially destroyed by air raids (This continued into the mid 60's). They were given the choice to stay, and live in France as Citizens, or, return with a lump-sum payment. A lot stayed, but most returned. The ones that stayed were not fully integrated into society (racism/classism, and some just didn't want to at all), and basically setup for the situation you have now, not working, and having a LOT of kids... The people that were rioting were all mainly under 30.

well boycotting anything outside of a 100% compliance of everyone would seem a waste (but wait for the rest) ....
i mean its cool like if you just dont go to KFC, i think i remember sayin you are a vegie, right?
so if you dont eat kfc, thats cool. but to pretty much take a national or even local boycott, you more or less do the advertisement FOR them during your news broadcasted boycott, and sure you may cause em to lose a few thousand customers, but then thats made up by even more who may see it and think "i havent had KFC in a while.
just like the davinci code. plenty of people never knew about it. then all the religious peeps went on cnn, fox, etc...started to boycott it....
pulled millions more who normally wouldnt have seen it into the theaters. just out of curiousity.
my view on this is its cool if you wanna refrain. even refrain with a few friends or a group... but publicizing it makes it that much more popular.

so were french fries..... but yet people boycotted those...of all things french.
but what does "having a pair" have to do with anything. simply because someone doesnt want to fight? thats more of a brawn over brains standpoint than anything. the war has happened. cant change that. however look at terror attacks or ATTEMPTS..... which countries are getting the brunt of em? US/ Britain.......
dont really hear of japan gettin em (n korea is not related to mid east war)
dont hear much of france gettin em.
less crap they have to worry about. remember, this isnt a world war.....yet..... to where we need alot of help. i honestly dont think the war is to a severity point where we need help yet from EVERYONE.

Just to inform you, there are plenty of Japaneese soldiers out here doing escort duties and fighting right next to our soldiers. As a matter of fact, I just traded one of my ACU's with a Jap just the other day for a set of his uniforms. (No, they do not fit, but how many chances do you get to have a real Jap uniform! I also have Italian and Brittish) I don't see Italy getting attacked either. Just FYI.

Japan, Italy etc... they have "token forces" ie, there are a few alphas that volunteer for brigades that will see service in Iraq, but it isn't mandatory because the governments of those forces are not pitching 100% weight behind the idea.
France has problems that are unrelated to Iraq, but somewhat related to the terrorism problem as a whole (as I stated earlier about the rioting).
Japan's main problem with terrorism is Aum Shinrikio and a couple of Japanese Communist Party: Red Army groups, but these are not generally related to the Mid-east.

I totally boycot the French now! No one do anything French...
Why, you ask?
Because they are dirty, diving, headbutting, 2nd place soccer players, that's why!!!
(Sorry, I'm just really excited still)

that i already know about, a few are there were also pulled out last week.
what i am referring to is attacks on home soil...
aka twin towers, london subway bombing....etc..
i dont think there have been any attacks on japan soil stemming from middle east involvement.

Now that I re-read that, I understand what you said: Do you need help there? No, you don't, but you need real troop deployment to actually secure the country, and get the home-grown military and national police back in.
Getting the rest of the world involved officially through the UN would involve swallowing pride and asking for help, but it would at least show a united front.

France got kick backs from Saddam the money trial is well documented so thats why they stayed out.
Germany sold them weapons so did the Soviets and thats why they were opposed to the war.

I'm personally boycotting all things French because Trezeguet can't score a fricking penalty kick. But anyway, back on topic.....

The RUSSIANS hadn't sold them anything after the fall of the Berlin wall...
France got kick backs? True enough, but they also have vested interests (ie billions of dollars) in infrastructure with outweighed the money scandal.
Germany sold weapons? When was this? AFTER 1991? I'm saying bollocks to that. The only groups that ever sold them weapons in any great quantities was the US and the USSR.
Transeat In Exemplum: Let this stand as the example.
Ok excuse me ! the SOVIETS ! Geeeez ! you knew what I ment lol ! And yes Germany did sell them weapons and supplies. I guess the news coverage is a little better down here ( shrug )

Yeah, I can see Germans selling arms before the trade sanctions, but once Jan. 15 1991 came and went, that's it. Same thing with Soviets... but they had bigger problems about that time. The USA had been shipping Biological viral components up until about a month before the dead line, and chemical components up until 3-4 months before the dead-line. It was never a problem until they went into Kuwait
I'm not slagging the US, just pointing out that a LOT of people sold weapons to Hussein, the French and Germans (hell, Swedes, Itallians, Spanish, a lot of the EU included) had actual humanitarian/civil projects on the go there until the strengthened sanctions cut off dual-use (or multi-porpoise
) technologies like water filtration and sewage treatment.
Transeat In Exemplum: Let this stand as the example.
But thats why those countries opposed the war, because we'd find out about them making money on Saddam.
Money is the reason for this war plain and simple, it can all be traced back to money.
