and give the illegal immigrants a free ride into america?

Should Maps be Given to Illegal Immigrants
By PIERRE THOMAS
Jan. 26, 2006 — Maps — showing routes into the United States — are being provided to illegal immigrants by a human rights organization, funded by the Mexican government.
Mexico's National Human Rights Commission plans to hand out 70,000 maps showing highways, with pointers to rescue beacons and water tanks. The goal is to help illegal immigrants safely enter the United States.
Despite the rash of criticism of the U.S. government for not doing more to keep illegal immigrants from crossing the U.S. border, some Americans support the Mexican effort.
"We urge them to know well the route that they are going and the distances," said the Rev. Robin Hoover, founder of Humane Borders. "If you do go, search for tanks of water beneath the blue flag. That's our flag."
Saving Lives but Breaking the Law?
Supporters of the project say the effort is about saving lives. Last year, more than 400 illegal immigrants died trying to cross the border with Mexico, many from severe heat and dehydration.
"We're just trying to save lives. That's what we are, a faith-based group," said Paul Fuschini, vice president of Humane Borders. "This is a humanitarian effort."
But critics believe that the project is encouraging more people to break the law, and that it may cause more deaths in the process.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff issued a statement saying he opposed the project in the "strongest terms."
"This effort will entice more people to cross, leading to more migrant death," he said.
The U.S. Border Patrol agrees.
"It's not the right thing to do. It's not the right thing to risk to try to get in this country through these very dangerous areas," said David Aguilar, chief of U.S. Border Patrol.
As thousands of illegal immigrants enter the country every day, the issue will likely intensify.
What if terrorists get a hold of these maps and use them to enter the country illegally yet safely? You want to come to America to work or learn do it legally.

Are you serious that you are this scared of terrorists? Terrorists have enough resources to help them, they don't need a free map.

I have to agree with the subject of this thread.. Why not just send a bus and bring them in by the batch? The problem isn't that they're trying to cross illegally, the problem is that they WANT to cross illegally. If their life wasn't so bad there and so good here, they wouldn't want to risk it.
I say illegal aliens should be made to work in labor camps in Alaska instead of just getting deported. Make getting caught such a terrible threat that no one in their right mind would risk it. 1 year shoveling snow in Alaska would be sufficient to deter future illegals.

The point is why give terrorists another resource to help them enter the country illegally. Of course the American gov't. is not supporting/funding this but the Mexican gov't is. Instead of the Mexican gov't funding thisd why don't they use those funds to make their country better so their people don't have to come up here to steal jobs away from americans. Also what they didn't mention in the news article but yet showed on their TV news story was the maps also show where it is somewhat easier to enter the country.
Cause the ACLU would bitch because the buses don't have air conditioning.

Then where would you get your vegetables and fruits?

And why can't we just get the maps and station ourselves at this designated points? What's so hard about that?

In regards to terrorists: They can enter the US any of about a thousand different ways...
If you'll remember, ALL of the people implicated in the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks were in the USA on LEGAL visas.

AGuSTiN, You live out that way so I know you've heard about the minute men. That group of guys who stand watch at the boarder with shot guns and such. I think they are doing what you suggested but the news media is makeing them out to be bad guys.
IMO we need more of them.

Well, the minutemen are in AZ, not CA. But a quick search found this nugget...
"Minuteman leader James Chase, head of the California Border Watch, has split with Minuteman Project, charging racism and fascism in the Minutemen's ranks."
Their own leader said that.

wanna know how to save lives? Shoot the bastards as they come over. In turn saving Americans who would be victims of gang related crimes. Though we tried that already....the damn extreme left wingers and ACLU yuppies raised hell about the Minutemen though

Just give them compasses with reverse polarity. Then they can goto South America instead of North America.
Just wondering - case of ignorance here - but how hard is it to get a visa and just do it legally? I have no idea...

I'm not really sure, but enough so that Bush himself thinks it's pretty hard. It was one of his campaign issues the first time he got elected until fellow Republicans shat on his ideas.

I thought we already established in this thread that the Minutemen were racist? So says their leader/founder.

Just a thought, but how can you form an organization whose function is to "detain Mexicans" and
not be racist? I thought that would be a given.
I remember something about Clinton making a public statement that any Cuban refugees would be welcomed in the US, then we got flooded with people who paddled over. Then Clinton said no more, sent a few ships to turn refugees back and the problem was reduced to a managable status.
The solution is to remove the "streets paved with gold" for illegal aliens. There has to be a consequence to being illegal other than getting deported. Counting sand in Arizona, shoveling snow in Alaska, listening to every George Bush speach looped 24 hours a day, some kind of punitive action. Make getting caught as an illegal "not worth the risk".

ALLL this bitching about illegal immigrants and look, a worker shortage. Crops are going to go unpicked and rot in the highest producing argicultural region in the United States.
A shining example of why stopping the flow of illegals without a plan to get them here legally is the HEIGHT of shortsidedness and idiocy.
I don't like Bush, but I support his push to get this done 200%.
http://www.insidebayarea.com/trivalleyherald/news/ci_3451871
Make a note that part of the reason why their is a shortage is because of demand from OTHER industries, like construction. Sounds like us Americans are the problem, too proud to work hard labor at jobs that pay $11-$14 an hour, which is good pay in this region.
Idiocy. Complete, F'n idiocy. Blaming the wrong people.

/\/\/\ I thought those were called "work visas". I'm all for legal immigration, even for short-term crop picking. I'm even for full immigration for anyone who wants to come to the US. My problem is that people who run across the border illegally have to remain on the lamb and can't get a real job, pay taxes, vote, etc.
I've heard that because of Canadian regulations, there are many Canadian doctors who spend 3-6 months in the US on a work visa, where they can earn as much as they want. What's the diff between this or a seasonal crop picker, other than the paycheck?

I'm Mexican. I live in the border city of Tijuana and I've never, ever seen an organization giving maps to people that want to cross the border illegally. It's just stupid, why would our government form an organization to aid illegal immigration? Do you really think our government would do that? **** no, the government wouldn't want to lose those workers and tax-payers.
[q]What if terrorists get a hold of these maps and use them to enter the country illegally yet safely?[/q]
Dude... have you ever been to the Mexican border? For those of us who cross the border legally with turist visas we have to form in line and wait for an hour or two(depending on our luck) before crossing the border. Luckily I have a sentri pass now and it takes only minutes for me to cross.
(I'm studying at an American college btw). Between our countries there are two barriers, both of them go from to the sea to God knows how far away in the desert, one is electrified. Do you really think a terrorist would fancy trying to cross the US-Mex border? **** no. In the border with Canada, on the other hand there is nothing afaik, and it is filled with Middle easterns, at least the cities I visited were filled with Middle easterns. The wife of my host, in fact comes from the Middle east. In Mexico there are very few Middle easterns most of which come from Lebanon and are Catholic. Few people practice Islam and they live mostly in the south state of Chiapas.
Bottom line: I wouldn't really worry about terrorists using Mexico to get to the US. But hey, it's better to be prepared for anything. I, for one don't give a damn what the Americans do to protect their border. It's like, I would want to know who comes into my house and for what purpose.
