Like the subject says. A fine is supposed to be a form of punishment/deterrent for a crime. The thing is it's not really fair. "Bob" works 2 jobs to support his family one day he is late picking up junior from daycare he is speeding and gets a $100 fine. Things are pretty tight for Bob for the next few weeks, junior misses out going to ceder point. Frank is single and has plenty of cash to play with. He just picked up his new Vette and he also get pulled over for the same $100 fine. The fine gets paid and he picks up a new radar detector the next day all is good. You can argue "if you can't do the time don't do the crime" this is true but should we let people who "can do the time" get away with it? Is a $100 fine really going to deter someone making 6 figure a year from doing anything?
AmazingJay
I agree, but the logistics of handling it the way you are most likely suggesting would be rather difficult.
so in other words, you're saying that most of the people on this site should be paying $5 speeding tickets...
do you really think that would deter us from speeding then?
besides, raising or lowering the cost of a fine is actually discrimination based on income levels.
if you can't afford the ticket, don't break the law (that doesn't mean if you can afford to that makes it right though). easier said than done, but it's the truth.
Sorry, but no.. Even if the logistical nightmare could be sorted out, the idea defies the concept that "all are equal before the law". You cannot talor fines to the perpitrator, that would be going against the "spirit of the law". Laws are talored to deal with the offence, not the perp. Absolutely not, no way.

plus, just because someone can afford it, doesn't mean they are above it. Get X amount of tickets in X amount of time an have your licences yanked.
Promise that forever we will never get better at growing up and learning to lie
That's the points system at work for ye.
that's the equaliser... Let the punishment fit the crime, not let the punishment be heavier if the jerk is rich and deserves it.

umm arent taxes are based on income?
^^^^nm ignore me i didfnt read that right
Speeding fines in Germany are based on income. I heard of one poor guy getting a
$10,000.00 speeding ticket cause he was rich. Makes to much sence to work here tho.

/\ I used to live in Germany and I do not know of such a thing. I moved out 5 years ago so that might have changed...
I think you're thinking of a more Socialist coutries like Sweden and Norway. I believe their system is set up like that.
I've made six figures, and paid more in income taxes than most people earn, and
don't really think making a good income needs to be penalized any further. Taxes are
income based, so what if fines are too, how about all other purchases too?
Smells like communism.
No upstate I thought it was on one of those worlds worst driver shows and it was on the autobahn. The guy was filming himself flying down the highway in his sportscar
at almost 300 kph. the cops busted him by seeing it on the internet and then re-cheking video of the road at the times shown and they got his tag number.
And it was recent as the Autobahn now has speedlimit signs posted that change according to weather conditions. But I don't know the exact date.

back in 98, schroeder tried to implement a 100km/hr, as they did back in 73 cause of the energy crisis back then, however it failed. small partly because autobahn crashes account for 10% of fatalities, which is actually lower there than here in the US, which is what was in comparison during that debate.
the did however reach some compromise... energy taxes could be raised, and city limits could be lowered.
cool thing is though with the electric signs, the speed limit (Höchstgeschwindigkeit) can be set for each lane...
its a beautiful thing though.... less idiots doing idiotic things. plus they also have speed cameras as well now...
Bob should have fought the ticket and he would have easily gotten a court date six - eight months after the offense... this would give bob enough time to save up the money if all goes to hell in court.
Problem Solved.
yeah, increasing fines based on income is going a little too far. We should adopt the points system to even it out and adopt a lot of the autobahns features, it's a great system. I also think that taxes should be based on spending, not income.
I agree with you on that... the TAXES that is...
We get taxed on our income and then again when we spend... pure ass shanking.
