LAS VEGAS, July 18, 2004 - Chevy Cavalier driver Nelson Hoyos liked the view from the winner's circle last month at Bandimere Speedway in Denver so much that he decided to stay there for this weekend's Garrett Turbo NHRA Sport Compact Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 2003 NHRA Pro FWD champion captured his second consecutive win of the season while lowering his own elapsed-time national record to 7.658 seconds during eliminations.

In HOT ROD, Marty Ladwig in his Pontiac Sunfire collected his eighth career win and fourth of the season by defeating Mike Crawford's Dodge Neon in the final round of eliminations with a track-record pass of 8.131 at 174.01 to Crawford's 8.328 at 173.01. Ladwig's elapsed time in the finals was the quickest pass ever in the HOT ROD category.

Hoyos, from Hollywood, Fla., drove the Ecotec-powered Chevrolet Cavalier to his second consecutive victory and ninth of his career by defeating Lisa Kubo's APC Saturn Ion Quad Coupe in the finals. Hoyos, who started the season with four consecutive runner-up finishes to Kubo, ran a 7.712 at 179.33 beating Kubo's 7.821 at 195.05. Kubo, also using Ecotec engine power in her Saturn, made the fastest pass in Pro FWD history with her 195.05-mph pass in the finals.

"This engine is on fire," Hoyos said. "We used the same engine as we did in Denver and it now has 12 straight runs in the sevens. The Ecotec engine rules and all the folks at Garrett Turbos were a big part of this win. We're back in the hunt and know it will be great run down the stretch of the season."

"The last run of the day was the best we had this weekend," said Ladwig. "I like saving the best for last. The Ecotec was fantastic again and the crew did a great job to get it ready. There is no doubt that the GM Team is doing extremely well. Hopefully, it will continue for the rest of the season."

In Pro RWD, Matt Hartford had a solid weekend in the Summit Racing Chevy Cavalier, qualifying No. 2 and defeating Brad Personett in a Toyota Celica in Round 1. The GM Twin-Turbo powered V6 recorded the fastest speed of the meet during qualifying at 205.22 mph. But he wasn't as fortunate in Round 2 of eliminations as he crossed the center line while making his pass against Ara Arslanian and was disqualified. Arslanian lost to Stephan Papadakis in the finals.

Television coverage of the Garrett Turbo NHRA Sport Compact Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday, July 31, starting at 6:30 p.m. (ET), and 30 minutes of event coverage will re-air on ESPN2 on Thursday, Aug. 12, at 2:30 a.m. (ET). Next stop on the 10-race NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series is the 4th annual NHRA Sport Compact Nationals at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas, on Aug. 7-8.
