GM Ecotec Engine Powers Hoyos To No. 1 Qualifying Position At Atco Raceway

ATCO, N.J., May 16, 2004 - Nelson Hoyos pushed his Ecotec-powered Chevy Cavalier into the No. 1 qualifying position in Pro FWD after final qualifications were completed today for tomorrow's final eliminations for the third annual NHRA Northeast Sport Compact Nationals at Atco Raceway.

The Hollywood, Fla., native narrowly missed establishing a new national mark with an elapsed time of 7.853 seconds at 188.33 mph. Lisa Kubo, who set the class standard earlier this year at 7.83 seconds and 190.30 mph, qualified second in her Ecotec-powered Saturn at 8.099 seconds at 183.42 mph.

"At this time, the Saturn team has been the one accumulating the most points, so it's pivotal that we reverse those roles this weekend," said Hoyos. "There's no doubt in my mind that we can run at the front of the pack. This event is crucial and has the potential to be a momentum boost for our race team. They have done so much work on the car, have really busted their tails on this thing, and really deserve a win."

In HOT ROD, Mike Crawford from Eden, N.C., claimed the No. 1 qualifying spot in his SRT-4 with a run of 8.311 seconds at 181.06 mph. Kenny Tran was second in a Honda Civic at 8.419 seconds at 171.01 mph, and Marty Ladwig was third in his Ecotec-powered Pontiac Sunfire at 8.461 seconds and 174.01 mph.

Television coverage of the NHRA Northeast Sport Compact Nationals presented by General Motors can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, June 6, starting at 12:00 p.m. Eastern.
